I’ve been super busy. But I take a break to present a quote from a student in an upper-division news editing class at UT’s School of Journalism:
“I don’t read newspapers. I know that sounds bad, but I don’t. And to be honest, I don’t know many people who do.”
Sigh.

ESPN College GameDay, 9/19/09.

Andrea and I initially wanted to camp out on the South Mall but later realized that was a terrible idea, so instead we trekked to campus at 7:30 a.m. The show didn’t start until 9:30, but ESPN was kind enough to play music over the loudspeakers. I’m sure all those football fans appreciated hearing Miley Cyrus so early in the morning.
Some people had made really hilarious signs. Highlights:
“Kanye is a Tech fan”
An unemployment check made out to Michael Crabtree
A photo of Graham Harrell accompanied by “At least I get to play in Canada”
“LHB doesn’t freestyle Texas Fight, big boy”
And of course:

Aaand a few more:

Our amazing view!

You know how some parents are really overbearing and controlling and totally smother their children? And then the kids go totally nuts when they’re off at college because they’re finally unsupervised and don’t even know where to begin. Well, my parents weren’t like that. They let my brother and me make our own choices, etc. But I think they may have seriously erred in one aspect of my childhood: My house never had cable.
As far as television is concerned, I’ve become that girl who goes nuts when she get to college. I had a handful of channels growing up, and now there are just so many (trashy) choices — which is why my Wednesday night included an hour of “Toddlers & Tiaras” on TLC, followed by an hour of “9/11: Millionaire Widows” on WEtv. I know, there’s really no excuse — but to be fair, the 9/11 program was actually pretty interesting.
Anyway, I’ll leave you with a lovely piece by Globe columnist Kevin Cullen.

So, through the journalism grapevine, I’ve received an e-mail about a potentially interesting opportunity for next semester. It could be cool for anyone who wants to work for a publication other than the Texan, try something new, or get some different experience for your resume. The e-mail is below.
The West Campus Word, UT’s next must-read news source, is looking for some talented writers and designers who are ready to bring a fresh perspective to our 40 Acres. We want enthusiastic individuals who aren’t afraid to compete against one of the most well funded college papers in the country — think of us as the David to The Daily Texan’s Goliath, minus the whole celebratory decapitation of our fallen rivals thing.
At any rate, since we’re building our staff from scratch, we’re hiring reporters, columnists, photographers, videographers, illustrators and graphic designers. Hours will be flexible, with most staffers responsible for producing content 2-3 days a week. Since we aren’t launching until next semester, you’ll have time to select a class schedule that won’t spread you too thin. Pay will be competitive.
Please e-mail your resumé and any questions you might have to Editor Josh Haney at joshaney@gmail.com.
I have many questions myself, so I’m going to meet with Josh this week. I’ll post more information as it becomes available.
In other news, I don’t approve any anonymous comments that are submitted on here. That’s silly. I’m aware of the extreme bravery people feel when they don’t have to take any responsibility for their actions, but since my name is attached to everything I write, that’s how we’ll do it. (Coincidentally, the only times I’ve ever gotten nasty anonymous comments were when I said something less than complimentary about The Daily Texan. Neat.)
